Tallest mountain in the solar system
Mount Olympus Mons is an extinct volcano on Mars, located near the planet's equator. This mountain is the highest in both absolute and relative height in the entire solar system. It got its name from Mount Olympus in Greece, where, according to myths, the Olympian gods lived.
The height of Olympus is 26 km from the base, which is 2.5 times the relative height of Mauna Kea, which is the highest volcano on Earth. The diameter of Olympus is about 540 km, the height of the steep slopes along the edges reaches a height of 7 km. The reasons for the formation of these giant cliffs have not yet found a convincing explanation; according to one hypothesis, this is the result of the erosion of the slopes of the volcano by the once existing ocean.
