The Mäqdäs or sanctuary, the easternmost area of the church, stands on an elevated plane and is accessed through the triumphal arch. Side rooms may be found to the north and/or south. Niches may be present in the walls, and holes in the floor. These service rooms match the eastern service rooms beside the sanctuary, which are called pastophoria. These four rooms stand at the corners of the cross-in-square interior.
