Prompt: Vegavis iaai was an extinct bird that lived in the late Cretaceous period, around 66 million years ago, and was discovered in 1992 on Vega Island in Antarctica. It was a relative of modern ducks and geese, and was about 12 inches long and had long legs. Vegavis had hollow bones like many theropod dinosaurs, and a faint scar on its upper arm that indicates it had a muscle similar to birds. Skeletal features suggest that it was a diving bird that used its feet for propulsion, and was likely as well-adapted to life in water as it was in the air

Vegavis also had a fossilized syrinx that was asymmetrical and goose-like, and its shape suggests it could make honk-like and quack-like sounds. It's not considered a direct ancestor of modern ducks or chickens, but its discovery shows that waterfowl were alive during the late Cretaceous, which challenges the theory that modern bird lineages only evolved after the non-avian dinosaurs went extinct.
The holotype specimen of Vegavis iaai is held by the Museo de La Plata in Argentina, and was first described as a new species in 2005. CT scans were used to study the delicate remains of the bird without damaging the fossil.
