Prompt: Chapter 2
Preparations for the last salute
The funeral preparations began immediately. The President, who had known Peter both as a hero and a mentor, made a statement at 3 am the next day as the press waited outside the hospital. He announced that Peter Parker would receive a state funeral and he would recieve the highest honor that a grateful nation could bestow upon him, a 10 day series of somber events that are set to begin in his hometown of Queens before moving to the capital.
Just like many presidents that lived before him he would lie in state at the capital building in Washington D.C. before he was to be eulogized at the national cathedral. The funeral procession would weave through the streets of New York City, passing landmarks that held significant meaning to Peter’s life before a mass would be held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
The Avengers were tasked with help from the department of national defense to plan and execute the security of the funeral. The world had changed much in the past century but the love for Spider-Man remained unchanged. The Avengers knew that Peter’s funeral would be a target for those seeking to disrupt peace and cause chaos. They had to ensure that Peter’s final journey was a safe one.
The city of New York went into mourning. The Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building were draped in black, their lights dimmed. The Daily Bugle, now a digital publication, released a special edition dedicated to Peter’s life. The city had never seen such a outpouring of grief and respect for a single individual.
As the sun rose over the city that never sleeps, the holographic billboards switched from advertising the latest tech and movies to displaying images of Spider-Man in action, his iconic poses frozen in time. Artillery salutes were carried out in many military installations from the nearby westpoint military academy to fort Knox.
