Prompt: Carl Rogers was born January 8th, 1902, in Illinois, Chicago, He was the fourth of six children. His Father was a civil engineer and his mother a housewife.

When Carl was twelve his family moved to West Chicago, where he became lonely and introverted. He started study as an agricultural major but later switched to religion.

After graduating from Wisconsin University, he married, moved to New York and became deeply involved in religion. He later switched to clinical psychology at Columbia University where he received his doctorate in 1931. It was here that he embarked on his work in counselling and psychotherapy. He published his major work entitled "Client-Centered Therapy" in 1951 where he posited his basic theory.

Rogers believed in the humanistic approach to the study of personality which seeks to emphasize the positive fulfilling elements of life. Rogers also believed that people are inherently good and are motivated to grow psychologically, aspiring to higher levels of fulfillment as they progress towards self-actualization.
